There is a saying that you don’t talk about religion, politics and money with other people.

Sure they affect every aspect of every person’s life, and many people have very strong views about them.

In fact that is the great thing about Australia.

We are not only free to have those views, beliefs and opinions but also free to express them or free to keep them to ourselves.

One current issue that has split public opinion and some would have us believe that split is based on religious beliefs is a matter currently before The Senate Inquiry into the  Marriage Equality Amendment Bill.

Some will say that religious people don’t want anyone who is different to them to be able to marry, but it isn’t that clear cut at all.

like many other organisations,

(here are a few selections) http://www.saltshakers.org.au/component/content/article/85-front-page-news/502-marriage-inquiry-submissions-needed http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/08/15/australian-christian-lobby-same-sex-marriage/ are today reminding supporters that they have till Monday to lodge submissions to the Senate inquiry into the bill and have their say  by post,  fax or email.

NOTE .... Here are some links I've inserted mid blog for those eager to find the relevant inquiry (and for the curious minded no I didn't read these for the Super Network listening audience.)

I’m not a supporter of the bill, I would hope the parliament knocks this bill back but the bigger issue isn’t the definition of marriage or even whether some people should or shouldn’t marry.

The much bigger issue is the freedom to have that public debate, freely and openly.

Democracy isn’t democracy and freedom isn’t free unless we are able to work through issues that we disagree on, even strongly disagree about.

There have been some who have said that those who oppose the bill, and oppose gay marriage have no right to to express those views.

To them I would say.  Turn It Up.  I’m Michael Robinson
